HISTORY
In the mid-1980s, Ivis Gibson founded Families in Action when the problems associated with
addiction to alcohol and drugs started to take root in Trinidad and Tobago. At that time, Ivis
decided to be one of the warriors in the battle against addiction and its devastation of the family.
She – along with her army of likeminded, dedicated and concerned citizens – birthed Families in
Action as a volunteer-based Drop-in Centre for people and families challenged by cocaine,
alcohol and other addiction.
From humble beginnings, FIA grew into the professional centre it is today; providing a variety of
services aimed at ensuring mental health and wellness as well as improving family life.
The organization was incorporated in 1988 as a non-profit, non-governmental organization.
