'From Risk to Strength'.
I was accepted into the Families in Action, family, in AUGUST OF 1991.
This was a critical time in my life/recovery. I was just coming back from my last relapse, having done a one month ADD-care program, and my first training, which would lead me to becoming a SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELLOR. I WAS FOUR MONTHS CLEAN.
Today I can, without doubt, say that being accepted into the FIA Family gave me the opportunity to build a healthy foundation in my new life. The persons at FIA, whether it was Marcia, Joe, Roger, Dianne, Esther, Maureen, Ivis or Eugene, they all expressed care and concern even when I wasn’t even aware that I needed it.
Then there were those Group sessions. At the back, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. They were some of the most dynamic groups that I have had the privilege of participating in. The groups nearly always comprised of persons of varying ages and gender, parents, spouses and even, siblings. All participated, whether I was a participant or the Facilitator. I benefitted significantly.
Through FIA I was able to implement the things I learnt on various courses and nurtured my skills as a counsellor, of course with appropriate guidance and supervision. The lessons I leant there is invaluable. To this day, there is seldom a week that goes by that I don’t recall some interaction that I was a part of at FIA.
Having honed my skills at FIA, I went on to become a Counsellor at New Life Ministries. The said place I had sought treatment two years prior.
Then I travelled to Guyana, where I have been involved in numerous Drug Treatment Programs. In the 2000, I became the Founder and Coordinator of PHOENIX RECOVERY.
Today, we treat with males and females, as well as complementing the national Drug Demand Reduction efforts.
I continue to be clean and sober.
